Our General Experience with Teddy Bear Cavapoos / Cavoodle
Friendly to strangers
Cavapoos as stranger-friendly dogs will greet guests with wagging tails and nuzzles; others are shy, indifferent, or even aggressive. However, no matter what the breed, a dog who was socialized and exposed to lots of different types, ages, sizes, and shapes of people as a puppy will respond better to strangers as an adult. Remember that even friendly dogs should stay on a good, strong leash!
Cavapoos friendliness toward other dogs and friendliness toward humans are two completely different things. Some dogs may attack or try to dominate other dogs, even if they’re love-bugs with people; others would rather play than fight; and some will turn tail and run. Breed isn’t the only factor. Dogs who lived with their littermates and mother until at least six to eight weeks of age and who spent lots of time playing with other dogs during puppyhood, are more likely to have good canine social skills.
Being gentle with children, sturdy enough to handle the heavy-handed pets and hugs they can dish out, and having a blasé attitude toward running, screaming children are all traits that make a kid-friendly dog. You may be surprised by who’s on that list: Cavapoos are considered good with children, and from our experience they are the best family pets so far.
Some breeds may be independent and aloof, even if they’ve been raised by the same person since puppyhood; others bond closely to one person and are indifferent to everyone else; and some shower the whole family with affection and this exactly where Cavapoos stand. They make the best family pets.
Contrary to popular belief, small size dogs doesn’t necessarily make an apartment dog. Plenty of small dogs are too high-energy and yappy for life in a high-rise. The good thing about Cavapoos is their ability to adapt in new environment and also how they can be trained makes a lot of the difference.
Tolerance with cold climate
Breeds with very short coats and little or no undercoat or body fat, such as Greyhounds, are vulnerable to the cold. This is different with cavapoos with their thick coat and undercoat. Cavapoos can thrive more better in cold weathers.
Tolerance with hot weather
With hot weather Cavapoos with thick double coats are vulnerable to overheating. From our experience, it borders them but it is your place to trim them properly and don’t over play them in the heat.
Cavapoos are simply easier than other breeds; they take to training better and are fairly easygoing. They’re also resilient enough to bounce back from your mistakes or inconsistencies. Cavapoos make the perfect breed for owners with no dog-owning experience.
Health and Grooming Needs
Potential for gaining weight
Cavapoos are known to have a haerty appetite and tend to put on weight easily. Overweight can cause health problems so it is important to be mindful on how you feed your Cavapoo puppy. You’ll need to limit treats, make sure they get enough exercise, and measure out their daily food servings into regular meals rather than leaving food out all the time.
Some breeds are brush-and-go dogs; others require regular bathing, clipping, and other grooming just to stay clean and healthy. Cavapoos fall under this category and need more attention. Consider whether you have the time and patience for a dog who needs a lot of grooming, or the money to pay someone else to do it.
Just as with every other breed, poor breeding practices can cause general health issues with a dog. Dogs are generaly prone to genetic health issues, which is not so in every case but just a high risk posibility. As a breeder, we make sure the parents are healthy and we make sure to have all the physical health information of the parents and relatives.
The amount of shedding with Cavapoos is limited compared to other breeds. Once our babies are up to date on their shots and with the right meals shedding is almost eliminated.
Easy to train
Other breeds require more time, patience and numerous repetitions during training. Cavapoos are very easy to train and quick in forming an association between a prompt (Such as the word “sit”) an action (sitting) and the consequence (which is getting a treat) very easily and quickly.
The intelligence level of Cavapoo puppies are very high. They are quick to learn and are wonderful with agility and search and rescue prompts. It is important to alsways stimulate their brains with obedience training and interactive dog toys for a brain workout.
Potential for mounthiness
This is common with some Cavapoos. Mouthiness means a tendecy to chew, nip and play-bite, which is a soft fairly painless bite that doesn’t puncture or hurt the skin. With Cavapoos it is another way to express their playful nature. This explans why they truely enjoy agame of fetch as well as a chew on a toy that’s been stuffed with kibble and treats.
Cavapoos are just averagely free spirited which is why we love them so much. They can easily be distracted but difficult to get fully lust in or with anything that catches their interest.
